Kitchen Renovation Timeline NZ From Measuring to Installation
Kitchen Renovation Timeline NZ: From Measuring to Installation
Base cabinets being installed during a New Zealand kitchen renovation.
A kitchen renovation is a sequence of connected decisions rather than one installation date. Measurements, appliance selections, cabinetry, benchtops, trades and delivery all need to reach the right stage before the next task begins.
This New Zealand kitchen renovation timeline explains the usual order of work. Actual durations depend on the project, products, site conditions, supplier lead times and trade availability, so confirm a project-specific programme before work starts.
Stage 1: Define the scope and budget
Decide whether the project is a cabinet replacement, a complete kitchen renovation or a layout change involving services or building work. List essential requirements, optional upgrades and the maximum complete-project budget.
Include cabinetry, panels, benchtop, appliances, sink, tapware, delivery, removal, installation and trades. Our 2026 NZ kitchen cost guide explains how to compare the full scope.
Stage 2: Measure the existing room
Record wall lengths, ceiling height, doors, windows, architraves, plumbing, electrical points, extraction, floor levels and anything that projects into the room. Measure each wall at more than one height and note corners that may not be square.
Follow the KC&S kitchen measuring guide and keep photos with the plan.
Stage 3: Confirm the layout
Arrange the main work zones, appliance locations, storage and walkways. Test every door, drawer and appliance in the open position. Include end panels, fillers, toe kicks and the clearances required beside walls and corners.
The KC&S 3D planner guidance can help you compare cabinet sequences before committing to an order.
Stage 4: Select appliances and services
Choose the exact refrigerator, oven, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave and rangehood early. Record model numbers and retain the installation instructions.
Confirm whether plumbing, electrical, gas or extraction locations need to change. Work that must be completed by qualified or licensed trades should be identified and scheduled before cabinetry is ordered.
Stage 5: Finalise cabinetry and finishes
Confirm every cabinet, door style, panel, filler, toe kick, handle and storage accessory. Check the current product dimensions and identify which cabinets will be supplied flat-packed or assembled.
If standard modules do not resolve the room, review our flat-pack versus custom cabinet guide before finalising the design.
Stage 6: Obtain complete quotations
Give suppliers and trades the same plan and specification. Compare inclusions, exclusions, lead times, delivery, assembly, installation, warranties and responsibilities.
Resolve unanswered questions before paying a deposit. Document the approved layout, product list and any later change.
Stage 7: Order long-lead products
Place orders only after measurements, appliances and the final layout have been checked. Confirm how stock is allocated, expected lead times, delivery conditions and where products can be stored safely.
Coordinate benchtop requirements carefully. Some benchtops can only be finally measured or templated after cabinets are installed and level.
Stage 8: Schedule trades and installation
Build a programme that reflects the real dependencies:
- old-kitchen removal and waste handling;
- room repairs and any approved building work;
- rough-in plumbing, electrical, gas and extraction work;
- walls, ceilings and flooring prepared as required;
- cabinet delivery and inspection;
- cabinet assembly and installation;
- benchtop measurement, manufacture and installation;
- appliance and service connections;
- splashback and finishing work; and
- final adjustment, cleaning and handover.
Do not assume every trade can work simultaneously in the same space.
Stage 9: Prepare for delivery
Confirm access, parking, unloading arrangements and a dry indoor storage area. Protect floors and clear a route from the delivery point to the work area.
When products arrive, compare the delivery with the order documents and record visible damage or missing items promptly. Keep components organised by cabinet.
Stage 10: Remove the old kitchen and prepare the room
Disconnect services safely and use the appropriate trades. Once the room is clear, check walls, floors, corners and service positions against the plan.
Resolve unexpected site conditions before installation continues. Trying to force the approved cabinet sequence around an unverified problem can create larger issues later.
Stage 11: Assemble and install cabinetry
Follow the current instructions supplied with each product. Establish level reference lines, identify suitable fixing points and install cabinets in a logical sequence.
Before benchtops are measured or fitted, confirm that cabinets are level, aligned, securely fixed and in their final positions. Use our Kitchen Cabinet Installation Checklist for NZ Homes for the detailed preparation and final checks.
Stage 12: Benchtops, connections and finishing
Complete the benchtop, sink, tapware and appliance work in the agreed order. Regulated connections should be completed by the appropriate trades.
Fit finishing panels, fillers, toe kicks and handles, then adjust doors and drawers. Check appliance clearances, service access and every opening before handover.
Stage 13: Final inspection and documentation
- Inspect visible surfaces and record any unresolved issue.
- Check doors, drawers, handles and soft-close hardware.
- Confirm appliances operate and required certificates or trade records are supplied.
- Keep invoices, product information, care instructions and warranty details together.
- Photograph concealed service locations before they are covered where appropriate.
What commonly delays a kitchen renovation?
- Measurements or appliance models changing after the order.
- Unconfirmed service locations.
- Products being ordered without panels, fillers or required accessories.
- Trade availability not being coordinated with delivery.
- Room damage or uneven surfaces discovered after removal.
- Benchtops being scheduled before cabinets are ready for final measurement.
- Late specification changes.
How to keep the timeline realistic
Nominate one person to maintain the current plan, product list and programme. Confirm the next dependency before each stage is booked, and leave reasonable time for delivery checks and genuine site variations.
