Standard Kitchen Cabinet Sizes in NZ: A Planning Guide

Standard kitchen cabinet sizes make it possible to design an efficient kitchen from repeatable modules. They also make products easier to price, order, replace and combine. The important point is that “standard” does not mean every supplier uses identical dimensions.

Use this guide to understand the main cabinet measurements, prepare your room plan and identify the clearances that need checking before you order.

The three dimensions to check

Every cabinet should be confirmed by width, height and depth. Product names often emphasise width, but the finished kitchen also depends on the cabinet-body depth, door thickness, legs, toe kick, panels, benchtop and handles.

  • Width determines how cabinets combine along a wall.
  • Height affects the finished benchtop level, wall-cabinet position and tall-unit alignment.
  • Depth affects worktop coverage, appliance fit, walkways and door clearances.

Always use the current product specification for the exact cabinet you intend to buy.

Common base cabinet sizes

Base cabinets sit below the benchtop. Modular ranges commonly include narrow units, standard single-door cabinets, drawer cabinets, wider double-door cabinets, sink cabinets, oven cabinets and corner units.

Widths frequently used in modular plans include 150, 200, 300, 400, 450, 500, 600, 800 and 900mm, although the available sequence varies by product type and range. A 600mm module is commonly used around many ovens and dishwashers, but appliance specifications must still be checked before ordering.

The cabinet body, adjustable legs or plinth system, door and benchtop combine to create the finished installation height. A finished worktop is often planned around an ergonomic level near 900mm, but floor variation, product dimensions and benchtop thickness can change the final result.

Wall cabinet sizes

Wall cabinets are generally shallower than base cabinets so the worktop remains usable and people can work without leaning around deep overhead units. Available widths often follow the base-cabinet modules so doors and vertical lines can be coordinated.

When positioning wall cabinets, check:

  • the distance above the finished benchtop;
  • rangehood and cooktop clearance requirements;
  • window, splashback and ceiling heights;
  • door swing and adjacent wall clearance;
  • safe fixing points and wall construction; and
  • whether decorative panels or fillers change the finished width.

Tall and pantry cabinet sizes

Tall cabinets can house pantry storage, ovens, microwaves or integrated appliances. Their final dimensions need to coordinate with adjoining cabinets, door lines, the ceiling and appliance ventilation.

Do not select an oven tower from appliance width alone. Confirm the manufacturer's installation diagram, required ventilation, usable opening, power location and whether trim pieces or filler panels are needed.

Corner cabinet measurements

Corner units require more than one wall dimension. The cabinet footprint, door position, blanking panel, adjacent drawer clearance and benchtop corner all affect the layout.

Check both wall runs and draw the doors and drawers in their open positions. Corner planning errors can prevent a drawer, dishwasher or handle from opening properly even when the total cabinet widths appear to fit.

Panels, fillers and toe kicks change the finished size

A row of cabinet widths is not necessarily the final wall-to-wall measurement. You may also need:

  • filler clearance beside walls and in corners;
  • finished end panels on visible cabinet sides;
  • panels around tall units or islands;
  • toe-kick returns and joining allowances; and
  • scribing allowance for walls that are not straight.

Appliance openings are not assumptions

Terms such as “600mm oven” describe a product category, not every installation detail. Two appliances with the same nominal width can have different cut-out, ventilation, connection and door-clearance requirements.

Record the exact make and model of the refrigerator, oven, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave and rangehood. Use the current appliance installation instructions when checking the cabinet plan.

A practical modular width example

Imagine a straight wall with a usable cabinet run of 3100mm. A first layout might combine a 600mm oven cabinet, 600mm drawer cabinet, 600mm sink cabinet, 600mm dishwasher opening and 600mm storage cabinet. That totals 3000mm, but the remaining 100mm is not automatically wasted.

It may be needed for wall clearance, a filler, end panels or minor room variation. The correct solution depends on which ends are visible, whether walls are square and how every door and drawer opens.

How to measure before choosing cabinet sizes

  1. Measure each wall at more than one height.
  2. Record ceiling height and note sloping or boxed areas.
  3. Mark doors, windows, architraves and their opening directions.
  4. Mark plumbing, electrical, gas and extraction points.
  5. Record appliance models and installation requirements.
  6. Check corners for square and floors for level.
  7. Add panels, fillers and working clearances to the cabinet widths.
  8. Recheck the complete sequence before ordering.

Common sizing mistakes to avoid

  • Using one wall measurement without checking top, middle and bottom.
  • Forgetting the thickness of finished panels.
  • Planning cabinets tightly between two walls with no fitting allowance.
  • Assuming an appliance opening without reading its installation sheet.
  • Ignoring handle, drawer and dishwasher collisions.
  • Measuring from an unfinished floor without confirming the final level.
  • Ordering a benchtop before cabinets are installed and checked.
