How to Plan Corner Kitchen Cabinets in NZ
How to Plan Corner Kitchen Cabinets in New Zealand
Kitchen corners can provide useful storage, but they need more planning than a straight cabinet run. The cabinet size, door opening, adjacent drawers, wall clearance and access inside the cabinet all need to work together.
Start with the complete corner
Measure both walls from the corner and record skirting, pipes, power points, windows and doorways. Check whether the walls are square. A small variation can affect fillers, end panels and the final position of neighbouring cabinets.
Use the actual appliance models and room measurements before ordering. Do not assume the nominal cabinet width is the same as the wall space required for the complete corner arrangement.
Understand blind-corner access
A blind-corner cabinet extends into the corner while its door opens from one side. Part of the storage sits behind the neighbouring cabinet line, so the layout needs enough space for the door, hinge and internal access.
The selected cabinet and door configuration determine the opening direction and accessible storage. Review the current product drawing and component list before purchase.
Protect door and drawer clearances
Check that adjacent cabinet doors, drawer fronts, handles and appliances can open without colliding. Fillers may be required beside a wall, tall panel or another cabinet. Corner planning should also allow for benchtop overhangs and visible end panels.
Keep services and appliances clear
Avoid placing plumbing, electrical outlets or appliance connections where they will block cabinet assembly, levelling or access. Confirm service changes with suitable trades before finalising the cabinet plan.
